Piers Anthony's Shame of Man is a towering saga of remarkable scope, retelling the story of humanity in a daring and exciting way. At once grand in scope and intimate in human detail, Shame of Man recounts the stunning journey of a single family reborn again and again throughout history.

Beginning in the earliest origins of our ancient ancestors who emerged from the Eden of Africa millions of years ago, Shame of Man follows two lovers - Hugh, a dreamer and musician, and his beloved Ann, a beautiful dancer - as they struggle to preserve their family and their way of life during some of the most turbulent periods of our savage past. Their saga takes them from the caves of prehistoric Europe to the Holy Land in the time of King David, through the imperial court of third century Japan and Damascus in the early days of Islam to Central Asia in the era of Genghis Khan and the fallen paradise of Easter Island, concluding with a harrowing glimpse of our future in the wreckage of a world devastated by global ecological catastrophe. Through their eyes we experience humanity's greatest triumphs and witness its greatest shame, the relentless exploitation of nature that now threatens our very survival.

I read The Isle of Women first, which I think is necessary. He is certainly telling the same story from two very different points of view, but the differences aren't really based on gender alone. He may have started out with that intent, but it appears to me that he found it too difficult to divide his story in that way. Some people, especially those more accustomed to his fantasy, might find the plot quite difficult to follow. The repetition of similar names, an effort to represent human characteristics that are unchanged regardless of the time or environment, can be particularly confusing, especially if one reads Shame of Man without reading Isle of Women first.

Nonetheless, readers who are interested in anthropology, should find the combination of two novels very interesting. If one reads just Shame of Man, then it can appear that by "man", Anthony means "mankind". It is absolutely necessary to read Anthony's introductory and concluding essays; otherwise, it will appear that there is either no plot or characterisation, or that neither is done very well.

I personally found it very stimulating, and am still questioning some of the human development characteristics he theorizes, but that's because I've read a lot of non-fiction dealing with the same ideas. If you're reading this because you're a Piers Anthony fantasy fan, you'll probably put it down within 20 pages. I'd recommend giving it more time before you give up on it.

Shame of Man (Audible Audio Edition) Piers Anthony Stephen Bel Davies Audible Studios Books Reviews

Recommend for those who prefer scientific publications but with a story to transcend the centuries inserted to make reading pleasurable and entertaining
I couldn't get interested in this book from the start, the description sounded interesting but it was a snooze and I didn't finish the first chapter.
Actually the first one I read. Loved it! If you like historical fiction and sexual situations, you'll pretty much love all of the books.
Lots of imagination stretches paucity of solid information on evolution of man. Traces generations in a single group of characters.
Interesting approach to history. It comes down real hard on the side of human induced climate change and paints a grim future for us if we don't start doing something.
I love this concept, and the fact that he doesn't adhere to the PC version of history. The amount of research he does, really shows and makes his probable version of history much more believable and likely, than anything I was taught in school. This is my 2nd time through the series and it just seems to make more sense each time. It is clearly a labor of love more than of profit.
Almost as interesting as Isle of Woman, the first in the series. I'd hoped that there would be more content and characters, with more time-frames selected, as Mr. Anthony had mentioned wanting to accomplish at the end of I of W. Still, I did enjoy the characters and situations encountered. I look forward to completing the series with Hope of Earth!
